Hunting in Spain: Seasons, Species, Licenses & What to Expect
The only country where you can hunt all four ibex subspecies, a traditional montería, the red stag rut and world-famous driven partridge — all in one guide.
Spain is one of Europe's premier hunting destinations — the only country where you can hunt all four subspecies of the Spanish ibex, experience the grandeur of a traditional montería, hunt the red stag rut in classic dehesa, and enjoy world-famous driven partridge shooting.
The species you can hunt
- Spanish ibex — four subspecies making up the grand slam.
- Red stag — best hunted during the rut (berrea), mid-September to mid-October.
- Montería — wild boar and red deer driven by hounds.
- Chamois — a demanding high-mountain trophy in the Pyrenees.
- Driven partridge — the ojeo, Spain's elegant wingshooting tradition.
- Mouflon, fallow deer, roe deer and Iberian wild boar round out the offer.
Hunting seasons at a glance
Seasons are set each year by regional hunting orders, so always confirm exact dates with your operator. As a general guide: red stag rut mid-Sept to mid-Oct; ibex Nov to Apr; montería Oct to Feb; driven partridge autumn to winter.
Licenses, insurance and trophies
International hunters need a regional hunting license and mandatory insurance. Firearms can be imported with the correct permits, or rifles provided. European trophies are measured on the CIC system, and the Spanish ibex is a CITES species requiring an export permit — all handled for you.
