Spanish Ibex Hunting: The Complete Guide to the Grand Slam

Spain is the only country on earth to hunt the Spanish ibex — and with all four subspecies, the celebrated grand slam. Here's how to plan it.

The Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica) is one of the most coveted mountain trophies in the world, and Spain is the only place on earth to hunt it. For the international hunter it offers something rare: four distinct, huntable subspecies within a single country, world-class trophy quality, and a hunting culture built over centuries.

The four subspecies: the Spanish Ibex Grand Slam

The grand slam refers to taking all four recognised subspecies, each in its own mountain range:

  • Beceite ibex — eastern Spain (Teruel, Tarragona, Castellón). The largest-bodied subspecies.
  • Gredos ibex — the Sierra de Gredos, west of Madrid. Classic high-country hunting.
  • Southeastern (Sureste) ibex — Murcia, Almería and eastern Andalusia.
  • Ronda ibex — the Serranía de Ronda in Málaga, close to the Costa del Sol.

When to hunt

Ibex can generally be hunted across autumn and winter into spring, with the prime window roughly November to April, depending on the region and the annual hunting order. Winter offers capes in prime condition and rutting activity that concentrates animals.

How trophies are scored: the CIC system

European trophies are measured using the CIC system rather than Boone & Crockett or SCI. A reputable operator estimates the CIC score in the field and quotes trophy fees by score band upfront, so there are no surprises after the shot.

Licenses and getting your trophy home

International hunters need regional licenses and mandatory insurance. Good news for trophy import: the Spanish ibex is not a CITES-listed species (IUCN Least Concern), so no CITES permit is required — the trophy travels on a veterinary health certificate and legal-origin documentation. A local operator handles licenses, insurance and veterinary paperwork, then prepares and ships the trophy with the correct documents for your home country, including import to Mexico and the United States.

Planning your hunt

The best dates and quota slots are allocated in advance, so early planning matters. Whether you want a single subspecies or the full grand slam, tell us your target, preferred dates and travel window and we send confirmed availability and net pricing within 24 hours.
